Your child's doctor visit starts before the doctor

A smoother visit can begin at home, with a few small, honest words.

A smoother visit can begin before you leave home.

You don't need a big explanation. Just a small, honest one:

  • "The doctor will look in your ears today."
  • "You can sit with me."
  • "She may use a small light."
  • "If you feel scared, you can tell us."

Children often feel safer when the day has fewer surprises. And parents feel better when they have a few words ready.

Why the unknown is the scary part

For an adult, an ear exam is a small thing. For a child, it can feel like a stranger coming very close to their body with an unfamiliar tool, suddenly and without warning.

That's why, in my clinic, I explain before I touch: "I'm going to use this little light to look inside your ear. It might feel a little strange, but I will be gentle. I will tell you before I start."

Fear often gets smaller when the unknown gets smaller. You can start shrinking it at breakfast.

One gentle rule

Try not to promise things you can't control, like "it won't hurt at all" or "it will be quick." Stick to the basic plan and to what's true. Children remember which adults tell them the truth, and it buys a lot of trust at the next visit.

It doesn't guarantee an easy visit. But it helps, more than most parents expect.
